Ingredients
Method
- Preheat oven to 350 °F
- Butter a 9x9 baking dish or 10-inch cast iron skillet.
- Toss apples with sugar, flour, lemon juice, chai spice, and salt. Place in dish.

- Mix topping ingredients, cut in butter until crumbly.

- Sprinkle crumble topping over apples.

- Bake 40 to 45 minutes until golden.

- Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Use firm baking apples so the filling softens without turning mushy.
- A mix of tart and sweet apples gives the best flavor. Granny Smith and Honeycrisp work well together.
- Keep the butter cold when making the crumble topping so it bakes up crumbly instead of greasy.
- The crisp is done when the topping is golden and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
- Let the apple crisp cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving so the filling can thicken slightly.
- If doubling the recipe, use a 9x13-inch baking dish and bake for 50 to 55 minutes, or until golden and bubbling.
